What MicroBench does

Microbiology has a shape no analyte result can hold: a specimen goes onto media, sits in an incubator, and is read at 24, 48 and 72 hours before anybody knows the answer. MicroBench keeps that shape. Every plate read is its own row, so one read on Monday and silence on Wednesday is visible rather than discovered when somebody asks for the report. What grows becomes a named isolate with a grid of antibiotic against S, I or R and the method it was read by, and the grid has to exist before a person can verify it. Verified isolates are what the unit antibiogram and the infection team’s outbreak line lists are built from — the first real source either has ever had.

How you actually use it

  1. Receive the specimenLog what arrived, from whom and when it was taken. It gets the lab’s own accession number and the barcode that goes on the report.
  2. Plate it, then read itRecord the media, then the read at 24, 48 and 72 hours. The board shows how far each plate has got, so nothing sits in the incubator unread.
  3. Name what grew and test itAdd the organism, then the antibiotics with S, I or R and the method. Verify it — that is the act that lets it reach the antibiogram.
  4. Issue the reportThe report is the grid: patient, specimen, the day-wise reads, each organism and its sensitivities, signed and filed.

What it does not do

It does not interpret a zone diameter for you: the S, I or R is the microbiologist’s call, and the method it was read by is recorded beside it. It will not verify an isolate with an empty grid, and it will not let a verified grid be extended quietly — an antibiogram built from isolates nobody tested is worse than no antibiogram.
