What eMAR does

Scan the patient, scan the drug: right patient, drug, dose, route, time checked at the bedside. Omissions carry reasons, controlled drugs need a witness co-sign, and the round is visible to the charge nurse live.

How you actually use it

  1. Open the round listThe open admissions with doses due, in the order they fall due — the round as it will actually be walked.
  2. Scan the wristband, scan the drug packRight patient and right drug are verified rather than assumed, and the screen says which of the two it has confirmed.
  3. Give it, or say why notAn omission carries its reason. A controlled drug will not record without a witness picked from the team and co-signing.
  4. The time on the chart is the real timeThe moment a dose is recorded is stamped by the database, never sent by the device, so a round written up at the end of a shift cannot be made to read as punctual. The charge nurse watches it live rather than afterwards.
