A Pap smear reported against the Bethesda categories rather than free text, so an ASC-US or an HSIL means the same thing on every report. The category the result falls into queues the recall interval it calls for, without anyone having to remember the schedule.
It does not read the slide — a cytologist or pathologist assigns the category; this only queues the recall the category implies.
