What it is

A fine-needle aspiration from booking to report. Book it for a site and side. At the procedure, record the guidance (palpation or ultrasound), the number of passes, the on-site adequacy look when the lab offers one, whether the sample is adequate, and where it went: smears, a cell block, or both. Every smear and cell block is kept as a slide with its preparation, stain and where it is filed. The report uses the category system that fits the site: Bethesda for thyroid, Milan for salivary gland, the IAC Yokohama system for breast. Lymph nodes and other sites are reported in words. A category must belong to its system, and an inadequate aspirate can only take the non-diagnostic one. When a LabBridge order carries the aspirate, the report is filed and signed there.
