At the bedside or in the OPD, a fine-needle aspirate is graded adequate or inadequate on the spot, and an adequate sample is routed straight to smear or cell block without a second trip back to the patient.
It does not perform the aspiration or the cytology read — it records the adequacy call and where the sample went next.
