A free flap’s colour, capillary refill, Doppler signal and temperature are checked and logged on the hour for the critical post-operative window, because a flap that is failing gives only a few hours’ warning. A check that falls outside the expected pattern pages the on-call team immediately instead of waiting for the next round.
It does not replace a clinician’s bedside check — it structures the check and escalates a bad one; a nurse still has to look at the flap.
