A retention period set once per study class — plain film, CT, MRI, mammography — so PACS purges or moves a study to cold storage on policy instead of on whoever remembers to do it. The policy is visible before it runs, and every action it takes is logged.
It does not purge a study still inside a legal hold or an open case — those are excluded from the policy run until released.
