Gratuity is worked out under the Payment of Gratuity Act’s own formula from years of service and last drawn salary, for retirement, resignation past five years, or an employee’s death where the rule waives the minimum tenure. The computed amount and its basis are kept on record, so a disputed figure can be traced back to the exact service years and salary it used.
It does not disburse the payment — that goes through the normal payment process; it computes the statutory amount and states which case (retirement, resignation, death) it was calculated under.
